Provides environmental and janitorial services for the Nutrition and Food Services Department.
Interact with staff, patients, Hospital and University Officials, and the general public.
  • Cleans assigned areas according to established standards.
  • Notes and reports items needing repair and hazardous conditions requiring correction.
  •  Records supply requisitions, cleaning log assignments and inventory.
  • Assists in the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and supplies.
  • Transports trash and hazardous waste to appropriate disposal area.
  • Observes safety precautions at all times, wears personal protective equipment (PPE) as appropriate.
  • Keeps chemical closet clean and locked as appropriate. Ensures chemicals are properly stored, labeled, and organized.
  • Performs routine kitchen cleaning, including the equipment, and offices.
  • Empties trashcans, replaces liners and cleans the exterior of trashcans.
  • Sweeps and damp/wet mop floor surfaces with approved cleaning solutions.
  • Washes the following: carts (inside and outside), refrigerators (inside & outside), counter tops, urns, stainless steel surfaces, water fountains, and other kitchen equipment.
  • Uses equipment properly and maintains assigned equipment in good safe working order.
  • Maintains quality and performance standards established by the department when performing duties.
  • Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
  • Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
  • Obtain necessary certifications as required by regulatory agencies.
  • Achieve appropriate Hospital performance and productivity standards as established.
  • Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.
  • Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.
  • Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.
  • Reports to work and conducts work in complete uniform provided by the department and maintains good hygiene at all times.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that further the customer service needs of the unit, such as answering phones, greeting and escorting patients, and administrative and clerical duties upon demand.   • High School or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.)
  • Prior environmental or janitorial work experience highly preferred.
  • May be required to work day, evening, night or weekend shift and holidays.

Must be able to stand, walk, sit, lift (25-75 lbs.) climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, pull, push, reach, handle, speak, hear, see (color vision), and organize for extended periods of time.  Possible exposure to hospital related hazards including, but not limited to chemical, heavy lifting, machinery, electrical equipment, temperature extremes.
