BASIC FUNCTION:
This position performs highly skilled and technical operations with an ultrasound machine on patients for diagnostic purposes at various locations throughout the Hospital
 
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Interacts internally with physicians including Radiologists, staff, patients, their families, and the general public. Interacts externally with Federal and local agencies.
 
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Performs routine and specialty sonographic procedures in cases involving all levels of difficulty. Performs portable bedside examinations when requested.
  • Operates complex and highly technical equipment including 2-D, 3-D, color, power and spectral Doppler modalities for various types of ultrasound examinations.
  • Ensures the diagnostic quality of all scans through extensive knowledge of ultrasound technique, disease processes and technical pitfalls.
  • Makes preliminary interpretation of the ultrasound examination in order to bring areas of suspected pathology to the attention of the attending physician/fellow or resident.
  • Checks patient’s documents to confirm ordered procedures and acquires pertinent clinical information from the patient, Hospital’s chart, electronic medical record system or other available records.
  • Assists physician in the performance of invasive and special procedures.
  • Greets patients with proper identification of patient and self, escorts patient’s to exam room, reassures patient, explains procedure prior to beginning the procedure, and answers questions when possible.
  • Adjusts explanations, communication style and procedures according to the patient’s age and/ or other specific needs.
  • Responds to patient’s request to the best of his/her abilities while at the same time keeping them informed of delays/problems etc.
  • Cleans and maintains ultrasound equipment, assures proper operation of instruments, reports equipment malfunction to the supervisor or his/her representative, and performs quality assurance test in accordance with described departmental policies.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities to ensure continuous improvement of services. Follows hospital wide and department specific safety and infection control standards.
  • Explains to patient and/ or nurses correct preparation for the procedures to be performed such as hydration, NPO etc.
  • Completes required paperwork and computer duties such as entering reports, recording completed procedures, logging studies, ordering procedures and adding and changing exams. Maintains safe patient environment before, during and after the procedure.
  • Explains procedure to patient and family members, answering patient questions and helping to alleviate fears about the procedure.
  • Follows instructions, works quickly and accurately in a fast paced environment.
  • Adheres to departmental policies, procedures, standards, and protocols to ensure effective departmental operations and quality patient care.
  • Participates and submits films for the Ultrasound Accreditation Process.
  • The employee is expected to achieve appropriate Hospital performance and productivity standards as established.
  • The employee will perform other duties that further the customer service needs of the unit, such as answering phones, greeting and escorting patients, and administrative and clerical duties upon demand.
  • These may include entering orders, obtaining lab results (electronically or via phone call), printing CD’s and reports, scheduling appointments and call to obtain referral if appropriate.
  • The employee will respond to emergent and urgent patient and operational issues.
  • The employee on occasion may be requested to cover part or all of other shifts, and/or be on call. The employee will obtain necessary certifications as required by regulatory agencies.
  • Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
  • Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
  • Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA standards.
  • Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements. Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area.
