BASIC FUNCTION:
 
Under direct supervision of a Physical Therapist, assists in restoring, maintaining and promoting not only optimal physical function but optimal wellness, fitness and quality of life as it relates to movement and health.

 
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Interacts with immediate staff members, physicians, patients and their families, other healthcare providers, Hospital and University officials, and the general public.
 
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Provides direct patient care services to ensure the effectiveness of Physical Therapy programs that have been planned and delegated by a Physical Therapist.
  • Utilizes correct modalities of treatment and suggests variations to written protocol as approved by Physical Therapist.
  • Communicates effectively with other clinicians providing care to the patient.
  • Submits accurate charge sheets on a daily basis.
  • Monitors frequency and duration of visits by reviewing physicians and therapists’ instructions and comparing to the plan of care and other documentation.
  • Provides accurate and timely progress report of patients as required by department protocol.
  • Participates in departmental patient care conferences with PTs.
  • Instructs patients and/or family in appropriate home exercise programs.
  • Gathers and assures confidentiality of information necessary to properly treat patients delegated by therapists.
  • Recommends equipment and/or assistive devices and instructs patients/families in the use and maintenance of such equipment/ devices.
  • Participates in quality assessment programs/activities, in-service continuing education programs and attend all staff meetings.
  • Assures neatness, orderliness and safety of patients and staff in all treatment areas.
  • Adheres to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
  • Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
  • Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.
  • Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.

  • Ability to pass a physical examination after being offered employment and a health assessment annually thereafter.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Physical Therapy procedures and equipment providing for safety and maximum patient benefit.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, perform one person transfer under routine and emergency situations, reposition a bedbound patient alone and ability to sit, stand, bend stoop, kneel, pull, climb, reach, lift, and perform repetitive movements of the upper extremities,
  • Ability to adapt standard Physical Therapy techniques to needs of special populations
  • Demonstrates flexibility to meet hospital and department needs.
  • Physically and mentally competent for performing standard Physical Therapy procedures and handling equipment
  • Competence in both oral and written English.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relationships with staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials, and the general public.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
 
Associates Degree as Physical Therapy Assistant.
Current license / registration by the District of Columbia as a Physical Therapy Assistant.
One (1) year experience as a Physical Therapy Assistant.
 
Must be able to stand, walk, sit, lift (up to 50lbs), climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, pull, push, reach, handle, write, file, speak, hear, see, evaluate, interpret and organize for extended periods of time.
