BASIC FUNCTION:
Performs all aspects of reprocessing and distribution activities in support of the department’s customer base.  Duties are performed in strict compliance with Howard and regulatory agencies’ policies and procedures, including association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN), Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), state and/or local government, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Joint Commission standards.

NATURE AND SCOPE:
Interacts internally with staff, physicians, other healthcare professionals, patients, various departments, Hospital and University Officials and the general public. 
 
Interacts externally with healthcare professionals, patients, regulatory agencies and the general public.
 
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Operates, monitors and cleans processing equipment.  Performs decontamination, assembly, sterilization, case cart preparation, instrument, supply inventory and processing duties as required.
 
Cleans and operates all departmental decontamination and sterilization equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s and hospital guidelines.
 
Checks department’s equipment, indictors and computer printouts to ensure that equipment is functioning properly and reports any malfunction to the Nurse Manager.
 
Completes and maintains records of all sterile processing functions required to meet Quality Assurance, Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies’ standards.
 
Checks processing equipment frequently to ensure that detergents, printer paper, ink and sterilizing agents are available and replenish as necessary.
 
Processes rigid flexible scopes and power equipment, lubricating them according to the manufactures specifications.
 
Checks procedure trays and instrument sets for accuracy and consistency ensuring that they are in good working condition.
 
Initials all work performed, accepting responsibility for the work.
 
Cleans and dusts cabinets, shelves and autoclave carts on a weekly basis.
 
Wipes down workstations and flat surfaces on a daily basis.
 
Cleans department autoclaves (steam, gas, sterrad) on a monthly basis and/or as needed.
 
Takes inventory of and maintain peel pack levels on a daily basis.
 
Prepares case carts for procedures. (All supplies except sutures are prepared in advance).
 
Ensures sterile processing cabinets are properly stocked as necessary.
 
Pick up instruments in sterile processing and place them in their proper locations.
 
Ensures that necessary supplies, instrument sets and peel packs are put on case cart.
 
Run the diagnostic cycle on the Steris prior to positioning instruments for the first case of the day.
 
Process scope/instruments in Steris for the first case as needed.
 
Conducts spore tests for all autoclaves.
 
Reports incidents and/or injuries to the Charge Nurse
 
Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
 
Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
 
Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.
 
Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.
 
Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
 
Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
High school graduate or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
 
Registered Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) certification desired.
 
In lieu of SPT certification, four (4) years comparable Operating Room or SPT experience in ambulatory and/or acute hospital setting.
 
Must be able to stand, walk, sit, lift (instrument sets, transporting equipment, supplies) stoop, kneel, bend, pull, push, reach, handle, write, file, speak, see (color vision), edit, interpret and organize for extended periods of time.
