BASIC FUNCTION:
The primary purpose of this position is to plan, direct and manage the daily activities of the Department of Nursing. The incumbent coordinates and implements departmental policies and procedures, evaluates departmental activities and recommends modifications, as needed.

NATURE AND SCOPE:
Interacts with immediate staff members, physicians, Hospital officials and the general public.
 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Prepares external and internal correspondence. Drafts general responses for approval of the Assistant Executive Director for Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse Officer.

Receives, annotates and screens incoming correspondence and determined routing and action as required.
 
Performs special projects such as compilation of data and preparation of swnmaries, budgets and reports as required by the Assistant Executive Director for Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse Officer.
 
Maintains and updates as appropriate records of units reporting to the Assistant Executive Director, including functional and organizational charts, budgets. personnel and activities in progress.
 
Serves as liaison between the Assistant Executive Director for Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse Officer and all other hospital divisions and departments.
 
Interprets and explains various policies and procedures and responds to administrative mquiries. Evaluates and recommends changes in administrative policies and procedures where applicable. Alerts the Assistant Executive Director for Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse Officer to inconsistencies or irregularities in the application of hospital policies and procedures.
 
Coordinates communications between the office of the Assistant Executive Director for Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse Officer and external organizations and groups as appropriate.
 
Receives and screens incoming phone calls. Answers general inquiries and follows through as required.
 
Scheduled and arranges special events for the Assistant Executive Director for Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse Officer. Coordinate searches and prepares related materials.
 
Maintains capital and supply inventories and processes orders and requests for services as appropriate.
 
Establishes and maintains necessary filing system including confidential records.
 
Coordinates the appointment calendar and makes travel arrangements. Schedules and arranges meetings, drafts agendas for committee meetings. Takes and transcribes meeting minutes. Prepares necessary materials for meetings.
 
Coordinates teaching and other seminar schedules as appropriate and prepares necessary materials for these activities.
 
Maintains professional association files, reports and correspondence as assigned and acts as support staff for offices held in professional organizations.
 
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

CORE COMPETENCIES:
Ability to work and interact with varying levels of personnel and external contacts. Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Good organizational skills.
 
Personal computer skills to include the  use  of  software such as WordPerfect, Lotus 1-2-3 or Quattro, Harvard Graphics, Paradox or D-Base.
 
Competence in both oral and written English.
 
Ability to establish and maintain effective and hamonious work  relations with staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials, and the general public.
 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's Degree in Business or a related field.

Five (5) years of progressively responsible administrative/supervisory experience in a hospital and/or university environment.
