The NP performs physical exams, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates care, collects and documents data and discharge patients. Utilizing clinical and administrative patient documentation skills, acts as on-call NP and fields incoming telephone calls from patients regarding their pre and post operative medial questions.  Performs telephone triage of calls using decision tree and consults the surgeon as needed.
Interact(s) with staff, physicians, patients and their families, other healthcare providers, Hospital and University officials, vendors, professional associations, community leaders, and the general public.
Utilizes the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and outcome evaluation. 
Initiates selected therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultation and laboratory examinations. 
Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient's condition.
Prescribes or recommends drugs, medical devices, or other forms of treatment, such as physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or related therapeutic procedures.
Provides, pre- and post-operative care instructions.
Provides patient/family or caregiver education and counseling on health condition. 
Works independently using the District of Columbia nurse practitioner’s nurse practice act, nursing standards and professional judgment.
Provides education for staff related to Neurosurgery clinical protocols.
Participates in meetings and committees as requested.
Communicates verbally and in writing all pertinent patient information to supervising MD, and other relevant health care providers.
Assists the surgeon in seeing patients on office visit days for consultations and follow-up visits.
Assists surgeons with writing orders for patients as needed.
Performs telephone triage for surgeon and office.
Reviews and manages test results, reports, and clearances.
Reviews lab results and prepares prescriptions.
Assists in maintaining inventory and ordering medical supplies.
Provides ongoing collaboration with interdisciplinary team and take the lead in developing quality improvement initiates with quality measures and measurable outcomes.
Utilizes the Outcomes Research Centers for Neurosurgery Research Projects and Grants.
Collects data for quality improvement research studies, maintains statistical data and generate appropriate reports as indicated.
Assists with the development and maintenance of protocols for neurosurgery patients.
Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.
Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.
Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.

Ability to exercise independent judgment.
Nursing skills in assessment, wound care, suture removal, medication administration, accurate documentation and follow-up.
Works well with members of multidisciplinary clinical treatment team.
Knowledge and experience with neurosurgery patients.
Ability to recognize complications in the neurosurgery patient population.
Ability to be flexible and maintain effective work practices during high volume periods and meet deadlines.
Ability to manage time efficiently.
Competent computer skills.
Competence in both oral and written English.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relationships with staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials, and the general public.

Masters degree in Nursing.  Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
Certified by the American Nurse Credential Center as a Nurse Practitioner.
Acute Care Nurse Practitioner preferred but will accept Family Nurse Practitioner with ICU Nursing experience.
Current DC License and CPR Certification.
Minimum one year experience working as a Nurse Practitioner. 
At least two (2) years of current experience in Neurosurgery and Tertiary Care preferred with demonstrated clinical expertise and assessment skills.
Must be able to stand, walk, sit, lift (12-25lbs), stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, pull, push, reach, handle, write, type, file, speak, hear, see (depth perception, color vision), calculate, compare, edit, evaluate, interpret and organize for extended periods of time.
