Responsible for providing direct patient care and support activities under the direction of licensed nursing personnel for a defined group of patients to achieve patient comfort, security, nourishment, hydration and other activities of daily care. Supports unit operational activities under the supervision of licensed nursing personnel.
Interacts internally with patients, nurses, visitors, physicians, and other health care providers as needed. Carries out  assigned patient/unit responsibilities maintaining effective communication and collaboration with patient families, friends, other staff, physicians and volunteers.
Makes daily rounds on patients with body traction equipment. Works with medical/nursing direction to adjust the equipment as needed.
Performs dressing changes or other treatment options.
Participates in preparing patients for discharge.
Assists patients to perform ADL’s (bathing, dressing, toileting, and grooming).
Coordinates the use and care of assistive devices, prosthetics and Orthopedic Devices.
Carries out male catheterization procedures throughout the inpatient units.
Transfers and transports patients as needed.
Organizes and prioritizes assignments to accommodate changing work situations under the guidance of licensed personnel.
Measures, records and provides for patient: Intake of food and fluid which includes patients with assistive feeding devices (Gastrostomy/ Dobhoff feeding tubes); measures output from bodily functions/specific draining/drainage devices (Foley Caths, JP drains, Colostomy/ ileostomy, etc.) and collect specimens as directed.
Provides an accurate, thorough and timely report of patient’s condition to health care personnel.
Can perform EKGs and other procedures when assigned.
Participates in providing a safe work and patient environment:
Assists in the identification of high-risk patients for falls.
Ensures fall precautions are taken for all applicable patients.
Communicates to assigned licensed nurse ongoing observations, patient status and response to care.
Aids in maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
Reports unsafe conditions to supervisor in a timely manner.
Assists in keeping work areas, patient rooms and care areas clean and orderly.
Utilizes standard precautions in providing patient care.
Participates in care of patients requiring restraints as stated in Patient Care Policy Procedure Manual.
Answers call lights in a timely manner and responds to the patients needs in a timely manner.
Participates on unit-specific quality teams and committees as assigned.
Performs patient care activities according to the Patient Care Policy Procedure Manual.
Exhibits fiscal accountability through cost-effective use of time, materials, supplies and other resources.
Answers telephone calls received on the unit and relays information to the appropriate staff person.
Utilizes computer for order-entry purposes and to retrieve patient information as requested by licensed personnel.
Assists the nursing staff in maintaining an adequate stock of supplies and functioning equipment on assigned unit.
Maintains patient charts and unit records in accordance with established procedures.
Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.
Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.
Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.

Basic knowledge and understanding of medical terminology.
Knowledge of departmental policies/procedures required to transcribe physicians’s orders, insert test reports on charts, use computer for order entry and retrieval of patient information.
Competence in both oral and written English.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relationships with staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials, and the general public.

High School graduate or equivalent.
Associate Degree graduate preferred. 
Five  or more years  of exemplary ERT  or Med Tech employment @ HUH or
Graduate of a Nursing or Medical school program but not boarded/registered/or licensed.
