  • Performs duties that relate to and support the provision of nursing care such as patient/resident hygiene and comfort, performance of activities of daily living and maintenance of clean and safe environment under the supervision of a licensed nurse.

  • Interacts internally with the patients, nurses, visitors, physicians, and other health care providers.
  • Prepares patient’s/resident’s unit.
  • Obtains weight, height, temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure.
  • Orients patient/resident, family to the unit (cx. Call light, B.R., visiting hour, etc.).
  • Completes patient/resident inventory sheet.
  • Performs personal hygiene activities: grooms hair, nails, bathes, showers, mouth care, bed making, perineaL/foley care, cleans and keeps bedside stand, over-bed table and closets neat and in order.
  • Displays greeting cards, arranges/discards flowers.
  • Measures and records intake and output.
  • Obtains and records vital signs, weight, and height.
  • Applies binders restraints, support stockings, ace bandage, splints, immobilizes and non-sterile dressing.  Performs range of motion.
  • Provides personal comfort and maintains the dignity of the patient/resident.
  • Assists the patient/resident in donning health aids such as eyeglasses, hearing aids, and dentures.
  • Distributes and collects meal trays.
  • Feeds patient/resident, serves between meals snacks.
  • Serves fresh ice and water at the beginning of each shift.
  • Responds to patient/resident request promptly and directs requests to the nurse when necessary.
  • Reports to the nurse any observation of change in patient/resident condition promptly.
  • Assists patient/resident in dressing.
  • Assists patient/resident in packing his/her belongings.
  • Performs post mortem care and accompanies expired patient/resident to the morgue and secures body according to procedures.
  • Attends and participates in unit educational programs.
  • Responds to fire and disaster as defined.
  • Documents on select worksheet (ex: meal percentage, B.M. log etc.).
  • Stores supplies and equipment.
  • Attends and participates in unit committees as assigned.
  • Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
  • Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
  • Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal health care program requirements.
  • Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.
  • Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in providing direct patients/residents care.
  • Ability to physically and emotionally perform essential functions of the job.
  • Ability and willingness to handle difficult patients/residents.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the unit staff, patients/residents, physicians, visitors, and other health care personnel.
  • Competence in both oral and written English.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relationships with staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials, and the general public.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Certificate of successful completion of a nursing assistant course.
  • Minimum of two (2) years documented experience as a nursing assistant in an acute care or long term setting.
Must be able to stand, walk, sit, lift (up to 50lbs ), bend, pull, push, write, speak, hear, see (depth of perception, color vision), compare, evaluate, interpret and organize for extended periods of time.
