This position assists patients with newborns with activities of daily living, provide basic nursing care to non-acutely ill patients, provide support in the LDR and Operating Rooms of Labor and Delivery and assist in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment.
Provides and assures patient centered, cost efficient, safe, culturally competent, linguistically sensitive and quality care by adhering to evidence based practice.
Professionally and courteously interact with staff, patients and their families, physicians, other healthcare providers and Hospital & University officials.
Functions under the clinical direction of a Registered Nurse and receives daily assignments from the Nurse Coordinator/Charge Nurse or designee.
Assists in the admission and discharge of patients, including but not limited to: patient orientation to the room and the unit; preparation of units, patient rooms and beds; processing patient valuables; and restocking the patient’s room.
Records observations of patient’s condition, the care provided and the patient’s responses. Reports to the Team Leader or Charge Nurse all observed changes and/or abnormalities in the condition of patients to whom assigned.
Performs personal hygiene activities for the patients to include grooming, bed making, cleaning and tidying bedside stand and over-bed table.
Performs the following nursing care activities according to established guidelines: surgical preparations; enemas and douches; assisting patients to the bathroom and/or bed; measuring intake and output and vitals signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, weight, height, blood pressure); applying non-sterile dressings; obtaining specimens; ambulating, turning, positioning and transporting patients; and providing mouth care and exercise to patients.
Feeds patients (excluding special feeding situation); serves meals, snacks, fresh ice and water.
Performs clerical duties in the absence of the Unit Secretary.
Responds to the patient’s requests (including call bells) and directs as necessary to the nurse.
Performs a variety of transport/delivery activities related to the care of patients when such service is not available.
Prepares patients and equipment for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and for the operating room.
Prepares and accompanies expired patients to the Morgue and secures the body according to procedures.
Transports patient care equipment from one area to another, including assisting with the placement and assembling of such equipment.
Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable aesthetic environment; includes cleaning equipment used in patient care and tidying surfaces.
Checks unit equipment and reports malfunctioning and assists in maintaining adequate levels of supplies/equipment.
Assists during the following obstetrical surgical procedures: cesarean section, Dilation & Curettage (D&C), tubal ligation, and cerclage,
Prepares supplies and equipment for labor and delivery surgical cases in a timely manner.
Performs duties such as: procuring supplies, opening packs, donning gowns, and labeling specimens to be taken to the laboratory while maintaining aseptic techniques.
Cleans and packages instruments, and resets rooms after use, ensuring sterility and availability of instruments and packages.
Controls traffic flow in labor and delivery sterile areas and observes persons entering labor and delivery surgical area for proper attire.
Collaborates with the Unit Secretary to ensure appropriate recording of labor statistics and ordering of materials and supplies.
Reports incidents and/or injuries to the nurse in charge.
Attends all identified classes and in-services required to maintain skills to perform job functions.
Promotes adherence to the Health Science Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance training, including HIPAA Privacy training.
Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.
Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.
Adheres to the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
and the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
Maintains confidentiality of patients, families and staff.
Establishes and maintains effective and harmonious working relations with staff, patients, hospital and university officials and the general public.

Knowledge of a proficiency in providing direct patient care.
Ability to use patient care equipment safely and effectively; for example, pulse oximeter, dinamapp, sequential compression device, glucose monitor, etc.
Ability to document direct patient care on appropriate forms.
Competence in both oral and written English.
Basic knowledge of fundamentals of anatomy, sterilization procedures, aseptic techniques, medical terminology and care of instruments in the obstetrical service.
Maintain knowledge of obstetrics instruments and surgical supplies.
Ability to adhere to strict policies and procedure involving safety hazards and the handling of materials according to Hospital’s policies and procedures.
Exceptional customer service skills essential.

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
Two years of Nursing Assistant or Scrub Technician experience in an acute care patient setting.
Successful completion of a hospital- or school-based training program for Operating Room Technician (ORT) or Labor and Delivery Scrub Technician.
Current American Heart Association BLS certificate
Must be able to stand, walk, sit, bend, lift up to 25 pounds, pull, push, reach beyond arm’s length, write, speak, hear, see, evaluate, organize, and tolerate a high/low temperature environment for extended periods of time.  Must be able to function in a latex environment.
