Under the direct supervision of the Retail Manager, performs cash register operations, cash reconciliation and other functions as needed. Operates cash registers according to Hospital’s policies and procedures.

Interacts internally with immediate staff at all levels, patients & their families, caregivers, students, faculty, healthcare providers, vendors, Hospital and University officials and the general public.

Operates cash registers according to Hospital’s policies and procedures.

Collects cash, meal tickets and accurately makes change for customers as needed.

Provides prompt, pleasant, courteous and respectful service to customers while controlling traffic.

Handles transactions responsibly and professionally, never leaving cash register unattended.

Maintains custody of keys and daily change fund.

Reconciles cash accurately. Prepares daily cash receipt reports precisely, accounting for all transactions.

Cleans soda machine weekly.

Maintains a clutter free, clean and orderly work area.

Communicates problems/issues to Supervisor and assist in resolving.

Assists customers with directions and other information as needed.

Accurately prepares and posts menus on boards prior to each meal.

Stocks condiments, flatware, napkin holders and assists in restocking throughout meal service.

Cleans dining room furniture and other equipment as assigned.

Assists in setting up food service register counters prior to serving meals.

Respond to emergent and urgent patient and operational issues.

Sets up and maintains coffee station, and stocks beverages.

Perform other duties that further the customer service needs of the unit, such as answering phones, greeting and escorting patients, Serving Hot Food, administrative and clerical duties upon demand. Cover part or all of other shifts, and/or be on call.

Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.

Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.

Obtain necessary certifications as required by regulatory agencies.

Achieve appropriate Hospital performance and productivity standards as established.

Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.

Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.

Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.

Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.

Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area.

High School or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) required.

Two (2) years of successful work experience as a cashier, preferably in a food services environment.

Must be able to stand, walk, sit, lift (at least 25 lbs), stoop, bend, pull, push, reach (beyond arm’s length),
write, speak, hear, see (depth perception, color vision), tolerate high/low temperature environment and
calculate for extended periods of time.
