Under the direct supervision of the Department Administrator and the general supervision of the Department Chairperson, the incumbent assists postgraduate dentist(s) and dental hygienists(s)   in all phases of preventative, general dentistry oral surgery procedures that are delivered as primary dental care services to patients of Howard University Hospital dental center.

This position does not have supervisory duties.
Internal contacts include medical/dental staff attending and faculty staff, patients, students and vendors.
External contacts include general public and community.
Greets patients in waiting area and escorts patients to the dental operatory for treatment.
Maintains dental operatory in a clean and neat working environment adhering to current infection control policies, patient and operatory exposure controls and safety controls.
Operates dental x-ray equipment to process, expose and develop intraoral and extraoral radiographs for diagnostic purposes. Mounts, labels and stores patients films in accordance with state regulation and department protocol.
Ensures operation of dental equipment by following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions, contacting the department Manager when repairs are needed, maintaining equipment inventories and assists in evaluating new equipment and techniques
Maintains dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory levels; anticipates needed supplies and compiles supply list to the department Manager for ordering purposes.
Conserves dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
Prepares daily schedules and pulls patient charts as required.
Reviews daily schedule to set up appropriate trays and instruments for scheduled procedures.
Cleans and prepares all instruments and equipment for disinfection and transporting such to central sterilization area and retrieving processed items daily to transport back to dental center.
Inputs accurate health information, intra-oral and extra-oral dental examination findings and proposed treatment procedures to patient’s digital dental records under the dentist or dental hygienist supervision. Assures that all forms are completed and signatures are on them.
Assists dentist in managing dental and medical emergencies by maintaining CPR certification and participating in practice drills.
Compiles and submits data for monthly production and patient statistics timely.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and or seminars.
Maintains and renews dental assistant registration as required by Board of Dentistry regulations.
Contributes to dental department efforts by accomplishing related results as needed.

Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.
Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.
Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.

Comprehensive knowledge of dental assisting techniques.
Comprehensive knowledge of dental instruments, dental terminology and dental coding.
Knowledge of dental anatomy and bony structures of the upper and lower jaw to take diagnostic dental radiographs.
Ability to maintain and exercise tact and courtesy in personal and telephone contacts.
Ability to input data accurately in the digital dental patient record.
Knowledge of dental software and applications.
Competence in both oral and written English.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relationships with staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials, and the general public.
High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). 
Two years of responsible work experience as a Level II Dental Assistant in a dental office, clinic and /or hospital.
Formal post-secondary accredited dental assisting training Certification from the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB)
Must possess a current Dental Assistant Level II registration license issued from the District of Columbia Board of Dentistry.
Possesses a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) card at the time of appointment or must successfully pass a CPR course within 30 days of hire.
Must be able to stand, walk, sit, lift (12-25lbs), bend, write, type, file, speak, hear, see, calculate, compare, edit, evaluate, interpret and organize for extended periods of time.
